LA CROSSE (WKBT) — New housing solutions could help La Crosse’s plan of zero homelessness.
La Crosse County revealed 52 units of specialized housing are in the works as part of their Pathways Home plan. 28 units will be provided by Couleecap Inc. and Karuna and are expected to be completed by 2026.
Ten units at the remodeled Hillview Campus will include 24/7 care, and units at the Collective on Fourth will also offer low-income housing options. Both of these projects are set to open in 2025.
A surge shelter is also in the works which will temporarily hold the homeless until they get connected to resources.
“Some of these projects we’re talking about are still two years away from housing, so we want to make sure we have an option for folks to have a place to stay that is warm and safe until housing units are ready,” says James Drees, homelessness response system manager of La Crosse County Human Services.
Right now, the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities are the only available homeless shelters in La Crosse.
The Pathways Home housing plan is being funded through ARPA grants.
